Mo’ne Davis made Little League history earlier in August of this year when she became the first female throw a shutout – giving away only two hits during the Little League World Series. Davis stands on the shoulders of pioneering women who blazed trails in the sport of baseball including Kathryn “Tubby” Jonson Massar (who played Little League in 1950 – leading to a ban on girls playing that was not lifted until 1972), Nancy Lotsey (who played in the New Jersey Small Fry League in 1963), and Edith Houghton (who scouted for the Philadelphia Phillies 1946-19510.

Oceanographer Sylvia Earle told many fascinating stories when she served as one of the panelists at the April 2014 National Women’s Hall of Fame’s ‘Conversation with Great Women.’ Her life purpose parallels the life purpose of Ruth Patrick: to ensure that the water on the earth is in good health and good for humans. Dr. Earle’s focus has been the oceans while Ms. Patrick’s focus has been fresh water.

On May 7, 2014, a groundbreaking ceremony for the Center for Great Women was held by the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York, the birthplace of women’s rights and the home of the Hall. In honor of that groundbreaking, in this month’s enewsletter we feature two of the women who were discussed in a talk the night before the ceremony. That talk highlighted a few of the groundbreaking women from our book Her Story: A Timeline of the Women Who Changed America. The two women we are pleased to feature are Frances Wisebart Jacobs and Saint Katharine Drexel.
